Peyton Mahan

Desert Sun Music was founded by Peyton Mahan, a musician, educator, and lifelong advocate for the transformative power of music. Drawing from a background in performance, private instruction, and adaptive teaching, Peyton created Desert Sun Music with a simple belief: every person deserves access to meaningful, individualized music education.

Through years of teaching students of all ages and abilities, Peyton developed an approach that balances technical growth with creativity, self-expression, and personal connection. Whether working with a young beginner, an aspiring performer, or an individual with developmental disabilities, lessons are tailored to each student's unique learning style, goals, and interests.

Inspired by the resilience and adaptability of desert ecosystems, Desert Sun Music embraces the idea that growth can happen in many different ways. Just as desert plants thrive by adapting to their environment, students flourish when education is flexible, supportive, and designed around their individual needs.

Today, Desert Sun Music provides personalized instruction in piano, guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, keyboard, and adaptive music education throughout the Los Angeles area. The mission remains the same: to create a welcoming environment where every student can develop confidence, creativity, and a lifelong connection to music.

Peyton taught my daughter Anna for 3 years. She was calm, creative and fun. If Anna didn’t respond to a song or technique, Peyton pivoted to make the teaching stick.

Anna learned to play piano, but more importantly learned to have fun with music. Because of Peyton’s example, Anna loves to experiment with the piano and sings without embarrassment.

Peyton’s passion for music and kindness with students makes her an amazing teacher.

I cannot recommend this guitar teacher highly enough. She is kind, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic, bringing a bubbly energy to every lesson. Her exceptional knowledge of music and guitar technique is matched by her ability to connect with students of all ages and skill levels.

What truly sets her apart is her talent for making learning fun while still encouraging students to rise to new challenges. She creates an environment where students feel supported, motivated, and excited to improve. During the COVID pandemic, she was especially invaluable, keeping my child engaged, entertained, and progressing musically during a difficult and isolating time.

Her passion for teaching, musical expertise, and dedication to her students make her an outstanding instructor. Any student would be fortunate to learn from her.

Peyton Mahan taught my son, Jamison, for 5 years (from age 8 to 12) and it was a really great experience. Peyton made piano fun - teaching the basics and moving up to poplar songs. She has a great mix of patience, encouragement, and musical know-how.

Jamison made real progress, not just in technique but in overall confidence and love for playing. One of the things I appreciated most was how she taught songs he thought were fun - like Dr Dre, theme songs (from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, and Halloween), and classical pieces.

These lessons helped him with math and concentration - he even played some songs in his summer camp talent shows! I cannot recommend Peyton enough!
